In years past, Sardis has taken groups of youth and adult chaperones on mission focused trips. Our latest mission trip was to New Orleans, LA where we helped in the rebuilding efforts from the destruction from Hurricane Katrina. Currently, we are planning an intergenerational mission trip for the summer of 2010 to rural Arkansas.
The Urban Ministries Center directs a winter venture with local congregations to provide beds for the homeless. Sardis hosts our homeless neighbors once a month from December to March. We provide dinner and breakfast in addition to a warm bed and warm shower. The children of Sardis also provide our guests with a bag lunch to take with them. Last winter Room in the Inn congregations provided over a thousand beds for homeless persons.
Periodically Sardis sends teams for a Saturday workday on a Habitat home. The pastors of Sardis also participate in an “all-clergy” build where clergy from faith traditions such as Judaism, Islam, Baha’ism, Catholicism, and Protestantism work alongside one another to build a home in the Charlotte area. This year there are plans not only for a team workday, and the “all-clergy” build, but also for Sardis to provide lunch for another work team.
Each fall an intergenerational group from Sardis participates in the Greater Charlotte Crop Hunger Walk. The 10K walk typically begins and ends at Memorial Stadium with the route going through residential Charlotte. In the last 30 years, $5,878, 918.72 has been raised by CROP Hunger Walkers to feed Charlotte and the world! $1,444,799 of that money raised has been used by hunger fighting agencies in Charlotte!
Loaves & Fishes is a non-profit organization that provides food for the poor in our city. They work in partnership with Crisis Assistance and other social ministries in Charlotte. We support Loaves & Fishes not only by including designating funds for them as part of our budgeted mission partners but also by holding annual food drives.
Crisis Assistance Ministry is the largest Christian ministry to the poor in our city. Their vision and purpose is to advocate for and provide assistance for those people within our community in financial crisis, helping them to move toward self-sufficiency. Started by the former Charlotte Clergy Association, Crisis Assistance provides funds to those in need in our community. We support Crisis Assistance Ministry by designating them as one of our budgeted mission partners.
Hope Chapel is a ministry to homeless persons in the uptown area. Sardis supports it through a partnership we have with about a dozen churches in the United Baptist Association. The chapel is located just off North Tryon Street. Each Sunday, over a 100 homeless person gather for coffee and donuts. Clothing and toiletries are made available. Around 8 AM a worship service is held. For many homeless persons, Hope Chapel has become their church.
