Sardis Academy sessions in May will focus on two provocative and related topics that are sure to keep participants thinking about living our faith in the world.
The Reverend Terry Brooks will lead the first two sessions - May 4 & 11 - titled, "Rethinking Corrections" Terry will begin with a history of corrections and imprisonment and how we arrived at the position we are today in our justice system. He will then lead us into perspectives on how we could have a more just justice system. Rev. Brooks served as chaplain in the South Carolina Department of Corrections for 31 years, the last 14 years as chief chaplain. In these sessions you'll hear about the lives of inmates and the treatment they receive, as well as ways we can be involved. Terry will also address the racial overtones that run throughout the system.
The second set of sessions - May 18&25 - will be led by the Reverend Tillie Duncan and titled, "Souls of White Folks." Tillie will lead discussions about race, power, and privilege and how these forces impact participants. Racism is a systemic force. It is not simply to be prejudiced about someone. Any person of any race can be prejudiced against persons of another ethnic background, religion, gender, and race. Racism in our culture, however, is a societal system that grants privilege to "white" persons and generally discriminates against persons "of color." Part of the sessions will explore how "white" participants have benefited in our culture simply by being born "white." Rev. Duncan has participated in several programming sessions by Mecklenburg Ministries on the topic of "Souls of White Folks" over the past few years.
May will be the last series of Sardis Academy sessions before we take a summer break. Dinner will be served at 5:45. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 for children and a maximum of $15 for families. All sessions - youth, children & adult - will begin at 6:30 and end at 7:30. Choir rehearsal begins at 7:30.

The past decade has caused more than a few of us to question extreme religious
devotion. The type of religious outrage that hijacked and flew planes into NYC’s
Twin Towers and the Pentagon and the type of moral certitude that brought down
the Federal Building in Oklahoma City seem to be examples of religion gone wrong.
But the religious beliefs that cause a person to murder innocent civilians out of some
sense of moral righteousness did not appear overnight. They took steps along a religious
pathway.
Some atheists have become best-selling authors in the past decade by declaring
that the atrocities of religious radicals condemn the whole lot of the faithful.
Should all Christians share the blame of a handful of radicals, all Muslims equivalent
with jihad extremists? Or can religion for some lose its memory, get off track, become
unhealthy, just as any other human endeavor may? What does “unhealthy” faith
look like? When are there warning signs that religious devotion is becoming
“UnChristian”? And how can faith become transformative again?
Dr. Phyllis Rodgerson Pleasants, Church History professor at the Baptist
Theological Seminary at Richmond, will explore those questions with a lecture series
at the Sardis Baptist Meetinghouse the last weekend in February. The weekend will
kick off on Friday night, February 25 with a single session. Saturday morning two sessions
will be broken up with a short intermission. Finally, the series will conclude
during the Sunday School period on Sunday morning and then Dr. Rodgerson Pleasants
will preach during worship.
The topic – UnChristian: When faith gets it wrong & How it can be made right
again – will explore historical points where the Christian faith became dysfunctional
and even harmful in a particular society along with ways in which the faith has corrected
itself and become transformational for society. While she will be using past
history as case studies, the dialogue will return us to the present day, taking past examples
to interpret current situations. The professor’s observations on the subject run
parallel to the dysfunction caused by human dementia – a loss of memory, a misdiagnosis
of the problem, a devotion to tradition without a sense of its meaning, and a
fear of the end. Can religion also “forget itself”?
Mark your calendars for Friday evening, February 25, Saturday morning, February
26, and Sunday morning, February 27. Invite a friend or neighbor.

Lecture Series - UnChristian: When faith gets it wrong & How it can be made right again

Feb 26, 2011

Get ready for BAOBAB BLAST! This year during Vacation Bible School we will take part in God’s Great Get-Together set under the impressive baobab tree. The baobab is a gigantic tree found in Africa that creates its own ecosystem by providing basic life needs like leaves, nectar, fruit, and bark for many different creatures. The baobab tree serves as a meeting place for many people to gather, discuss, and share stories. At Baobab Blast, the baobab tree is the central figure – the hub of activity, energy, and life. The baobab tree supports and invites community. In fact, the baobab tree is a symbol of community.
Each day we’ll encounter Bible stories about trusting God, loving one another, following God’s teachings, caring for others, and sharing our faith. The framework each day is built on is a Bible story. Stories like that of Abraham, Joseph and his brothers, and Philip and the Ethiopian. To reinforce biblical themes, we’ll learn about different animals found in Africa. For example, we’ll learn how just like Abraham trusted God when God told him to move to a new land, zebra foals trust their whole community to keep them safe from harm. These themes will be explored through song, storytelling, art exploration, scientific discovery, and game playing. Every activity is designed to help kids understand how to build nurturing relationships with God, family, and others.
Who will lead this Great Get-Together? That someone is YOU! Take some time these coming weeks to consider how you might be involved in this ministry with children. Could you help with planning and decoration, with skits and opening celebration, with coordinating snacks, with leading storytelling or science, or as an extra helper for our leaders?
This promises to be a wonderful experience for both children and adults as we see that “From East to West, the powerful Lord God has been calling together everyone on earth.” (Psalm 50:1)

The Racial Reconciliation Task Force of CBFNC (Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of North Carolina) is offering this workshop for pastoral and ministry staff or congregational leaders and leadership teams. The gathering is designed to clarify the call to pursue racial reconciliation as the Body of Christ. Questions regarding the biblical and theological foundations for this work will be addressed.
A working definition of racism will be offered as a way to shape our conversation regarding the nature of racism, the ways racism impacts our communities, diminishes our humanity, and impairs the witness of our congregations. Since diagnosis determines treatment, the sessions will conclude with a discussion of concrete strategies and practices to assist ministry engagement in a congregational setting.
Registration fee is $15 (lunch included). Deadline for registration is July 7. Register online at www.cbfnc.org.

Sardis Academy in May will focus on spiritual gifts.  The New Testament says that God has gifted each person with abilities to be used in ministry.  The first two weeks will take a look at some scriptural and practical matters.  In week 3 participants will take an assessment test to help each person identify areas where they are gifted.  The final week will wrap up the study and encourage participants to be active in the areas of their giftedness.  Dinner is at 5:45 ($6 for adults, $3 for children, $15 max for families).  Children's sessions begin at 6:15.  They will be studying mission work in rural Arkansas -- where some Sardis folks will work this summer.  The older students will also have music sessions to prepare for the CBF Worship Service on Friday, June 25, where they will be part of a mass children's choir of 150 youngsters.
